Laptop Security

Laptop Security does not only refer to unauthorised access to your data through computer viruses or computer crackers, it also refers to the physical security of it. Before the invention of laptops, no one would carry computer data with them, simply because computers were too big and heavy. Now days carrying mass data is common but carries many risks.

Laptop Security can be increased through a number of easy ways. Here are some tips that you might find useful:

Have A Secure Login

The simplest and yet one of the most secure ways to protect your computer is have a good secure password. A secure password would include a mixture of letters (a to z), numbers (0 to 9) and punctuation (,.;!” etc). Additionally, longer passwords are better so aim for having more than 10 characters. If possible try making your password contain random characters rather than having words in your password. Just say someone sees you type ‘polar’ as the beginning of your password. It is easy to assume that your password is ‘polarbear’, however if you include numbers and punctuation it is significantly harder.

Encrypt Your Data

Laptop Security is enhanced by encrypting your data. Even if someone might steal your laptop and cracked your password they will not be able to view your data. Data Encryption is the process of making readable data unreadable through a series of complex algorithms. If you view the encrypted data it is just a mixture of letters, numbers and symbols. The only way to view the data is decrypt it with a special key the original owner would have.

Avoid Using Laptop Carry Bags

But why? Well ask yourself this ‘what could possibly be inside a laptop carry bag?’ Carrying such bags is like holding up a billboard poster advertising to the world that you are carrying a laptop. If you want to protect your laptop from thieves always try and hide it. There are backpacks and padded suits that are able to hold your laptop securely. They are less discrete.

Even though it is important to protect your data from online theft it is equally important to protect yourself from physical theft. Taking simple steps such as having a secure password, encrypting your data and avoid advertising your laptop will increase Laptop Security.
