The world wide phenomenon of the internet could not be possible without the services provided to the public by ISP Providers.
What are ISP Providers?
ISP stands for the word Internet Service Provider and it acts as a link between the ‘cloud’ known as the internet and us. It is the only way consumers can communicate with web servers to access a website. Internet service providers do not only offer internet services and often have the ability to offer plans that combines both telephone services and internet services. Typically a combination of both will cost less than getting the services separately.
Connection Types
ISP Providers can employ a diverse range of connection types according a client’s needs.
Connections include:
- Dial Up
- Cable
- DSL
Dial Up
Dial Up was the most common types of connections provided by ISP Providers when internet was in its infant stage. A dial up connection would require the use of telephone lines as its connection medium. The host’s computer was attached to a modem, either inbuilt or external, which was then connected to a telephone line. The modem then dial into the ISP provider’s node and a modem to modem link is established. Dial up speeds were very limited and the highest being 56 kb/s which is terribly slower to today’s standards.
Cable
Cable internet connections take advantage of previous television cables. To use the television network infrastructure that client’s will need to use a cable modem, which is generally supplied by ISP Providers as part of the plan. Business cable connections have been known to be as high as 300mb/s whereas consumer speeds up to 30mb/s.
DSL
DSL stands for digital subscriber line and is used similarly to dial up. DSL uses the telephone lines as its medium but, unlike dial up, the telephone can also be used at the same time. Like a dialup and cable connection, a modem is also needed to enable the use of the telephone line. In terms of speed, DSL speeds can be as high as 10mb/s.
When determining which ISP Providers to use take inconsideration the connection type, bandwidth need and download limit. Additionally, it is normally best to integrate your phone and internet services for a lower deal.
